In a fundraising email and multiple social media posts, Colorado’s Republican Party has called for the burning of LGBTQ Pride flags, labeling LGBTQ Americans as “godless groomers” during Pride Month.
According to the email, “The godless groomers in our society want to attack what is decent, holy, and righteous so they can ultimately harm our children.” As June begins, these individuals are once again attempting to cause harm.
State Republican Party Chair Dave Williams, who is also a congressional candidate, has signed the party’s message that includes a hyperlink to a sermon by Mark Driscoll, an evangelical pastor notorious for his anti-LGBTQ opinions.
Jeff Crank, a conservative podcast host, poses a competitive primary challenge to Williams, who is vying for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District. Despite receiving an endorsement from former President Trump, Williams has to face tough competition from Crank, who secured an endorsement from Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in May.
The 5th District of Colorado, which encompasses Colorado Springs, was the site of a tragic mass shooting in 2022 at an LGBTQ nightclub, resulting in the loss of five lives and leaving over two dozen people injured. Survivors of the attack have attributed it to the promotion of “extreme anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric” and policies favored by Republicans.
According to Williams’ statement to The Hill, the Colorado Republican Party does not regret stating that “God hates pride or pride flags,” as they believe that promoting such an agenda harms children and undermines parental authority.
In an email statement, he asserted that the criticism is mainly stemming from radical Democrats, the fake news media, and feeble Republicans who submit to the leftist cancel culture.
In response to an email sent on Monday, Valdamar Archuleta, a GOP candidate for Congress and president of the Colorado chapter of Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative LGBTQ advocacy organization, has decided to renounce the party’s endorsement.
In a recent statement, he expressed his criticism towards the recent developments in the celebration of Pride and his strong support for safeguarding children from exposure to adult-oriented environments and entertainment. Despite this, he believes that a recent email went too far and was filled with hateful content.
“He added that this email is not a representation of the Republican voters of Colorado.”
During Pride Month last year, the state GOP sent an email to their supporters with the subject line “Pride is evil.” This action led to a clash between Archuleta and the Log Cabin Republicans with the party.
The email and social media posts of the GOP were condemned by State Democrats as well.
On X, Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib expressed his concern over the CO GOP’s hateful behavior and how it has become a defining characteristic of the party. He emphasized the need for Democrats to organize themselves at every level to counter the CO GOP and their actions.
The Hill received a statement from a spokesperson of Colorado Governor Jared Polis, who is the first openly gay governor in the United States and a member of the Democratic Party. The statement strongly condemned the email in question.
A spokesperson quickly dismissed the absurd mailer, stating that Governor Polis is committed to building an inclusive Colorado that supports and empowers individuals regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. The Governor is eagerly anticipating Pride Month and intends to celebrate it alongside his fellow Coloradans, refusing to allow the nonsensical rants of a politician to impede his efforts towards progress.
The LGBTQ issues have pushed Colorado’s Republican Party further to the right. Recently, in a fundraising email sent out in May, the party suggested parents to remove their children from public schools, stating concerns over “LGBTQ indoctrination.”
