A “serious incident” in China injured four Cornell College lecturers, the university announced on Monday.
The incident occurred in a public park in Jilin City, China, on Sunday, according to the statement. On Tuesday, a Chinese official declared that the instructors faced “attacks while sightseeing” at Beishan Park.
“We immediately transported all the injured to the hospital and provided them with proper care.” Lin Jian, the foreign ministry’s spokesperson, stated that none of them are at risk of their lives. ” The police initially determined that this case was an isolated incident and is currently under further investigation.”
According to the university, Cornell College has ties to Beihua University, and a local faculty member accompanied the instructors during the incident.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a statement on Monday, stating she had spoken with Iowa’s federal delegation and the state department “in response to this horrifying attack.”
“Please pray for their full recovery, safe return, and their families here at home,” Reynolds said.
The Department of State issued a statement saying it was “aware of reports of a stabbing incident in Jilin, People’s Republic of China.”
“We are monitoring the situation and have no further comments at this time,” the department said.
Lin, a Chinese official, stated that cultural exchanges like the one the teachers were conducting were “in the common interests” of the United States and China.
“China has always taken effective measures and will continue to take relevant measures to effectively protect the safety of all foreigners in China,” Lin stated on Tuesday. “The sporadic cases will not affect the normal development of Sino-US cultural exchanges.”
Cornell College is a private liberal arts institution in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
