Kids Kab is Back for Year Two of Winter Recreation Basketball

Southampton County, VA.  Kids Kab, a local children’s non-profit organization, is excited to announce that the registration for Winter Recreation Basketball is open. Deadline for registration is December 17.

Games for the Kids Kab Winter Recreation Basketball League will begin on January 6. Teams participating in the league will play, at most, 8 games to include playoffs and championship. All-stars will be chosen and this year the league will feature a Skills Challenge All-star weekend. Registration for the Winter Recreation Basketball League is $40 per player. Boys and Girls ages 5-14 can play. Three divisions will be formed within the league, Midget (5-7), Junior (8-10) and Senior (11-14). Cheerleading is also open, and registration is $30. The registration deadline is December 17. Teams will be coached by Hoops League coaches and volunteers of the Kids Kab organization.

On December 16, the League will host a free skill development clinic from 9 am – 12 pm at Southampton Middle School. Any interested and/or registered individuals should attend the clinic. Kids Kab is a non-profit organization with a mission to support, empower and cultivate youth by providing safe, inspirational and educational activities and transportation for school-age children. Kids Kab was founded in January 2016 by local community leader and Mentor, C.C. Cooper.  In addition to recreation basketball, the organization has several programs that impact the community in a positive and hands on way. The Kids Kab Mobile Mentors program provides mentoring to children while transporting them to and from their educational and enrichment activities. Currently, the organization has 75 children enrolled in this program. The Mobile Meals division began providing hot meals to the underserved population of our community in December 2016.

C3YFCL Extends Youth Football & Cheer Registration

Southampton County, VA. The 2015 registrations have been so successful for C3YFCL that we have extended the date. The extension will give more parents an opportunity to register their children. Slots are filling quickly on all teams. To ensure that your child has the opportunity to participate on the team of their choice attend our next registration to be held on July 11, 2015 from 10am2pm. Registration will be held at Cover 3 Foundation, 125 S. College Drive, Franklin, VA.
Registration with C3YFCL is open to all children between the ages of 6 – 12 as of September 30th for cheer and ages 6 – 14 as of September 30th for football. To register your child please bring a copy of their birth certificate and most recent report card. Registration fees are $20 for cheer, $30 for flag and $40 for tackle.
Children can register with any open team in the League. Registration for Courtland Tide Cheer is closed and the other squads are filling quickly. For anyone wishing to register for cheer squads please choose one of the remaining area squads before they reach capacity.
The teams for the 2015 season are as follows: Courtland Tide, Holland Razorbacks, Riverdale Chiefs, Meherrin Pirates and Sussex Green Machine For the 2015 season, all children are allowed to play for the group of their choice. For questions concerning registration, please contact 757-562-2252.

C3YFCL Spring Camp Success, 155 Participated

Southampton County, VA. The 6th annual Cover 3 Youth Football and Cheer Camp was a huge success.  85 campers participated in football and 35 campers participated in cheering. The camp was directed by Southampton County native and Commissioner of the C3YFCL, Greg Scott. Additional assistance was provided by a combination of 13 C3YFCL league representatives and coaches, Hampton University’s Coach Gary Lowery along with 7 Hampton University football players and an additional Hampton assistant.  Cheerleaders were led by Malani Mitchell of Hampton University Athletics Personnel, her assistant and two C3YFCL coaches.  A total of 35 volunteers attended.

The C3YFCL Camp was held Saturday, April 25th from 9 am – 3 pm on the Southampton High School football field and in the Southampton Middle School gym.  Cloudy skies and bursts of rain were not enough to keep participants from learning all that they could. All directors and volunteers worked with passion and energy despite the weather challenges.  “I am thrilled about the amount of participation in the camp,” said Scott. “I am thankful for the Cover 3 staff, volunteers, and parents who came out to contribute to such a great event. I am looking forward to next year’s camp,” he added.  Sponsored by the NFL Foundation and Cover 3 Foundation the camp was open to the public and welcomed walk-up registrations. After lunch was provided by C3 Kid’s Meals, participants enjoyed several friendly, flag football competitions while coaches, other assistants, and spectators cheered them on.  Cheerleaders broke off to work inside the gymnasium at Southampton Middle School away from the elements. “It was my first time coaching with Cover 3 and I really enjoyed it, participation was great, and I learned from the kids as they learned from me,” said Malani Mitchell.

Members of the Southampton County Sheriff’s Department were on hand for event control and support. Additionally, members of Courtland Rescue were available to assist with any medical needs. Southampton Middle School Principal, Mr. Darian Bell and Assistant Principal, Mrs. Susan Melbye attended and participated in the camp as well as staff members from Southampton High School Football. Many parents stayed to observe camp. An upcoming football player’s parent expressed his appreciation to Greg Scott and the staff of Cover 3 Youth Football and Cheer League for the camp and reported that his son had a great time.

Registration will also be held on May 23, registration will be held in Holland at the City of Suffolk’s Holland Park, 6720 Ruritan Blvd, Suffolk from 9 am – 12 noon, on June 6, registration will be held at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Grays Shop Rd, Newsoms from 9 am – 12 noon. There will also be a Saturday registration on June 20 at the Foundation headquarters from 9 am – 12 noon. Registration deadline for all coaches is June 1 and for players is June 30.

70 Youth Pre-registered for Football & Cheer Camp

Southampton County, VA. The 6th Free Cover 3 Youth Football & Cheer Camp will be April 25 from 9 am – 3 pm. The camp will be held at Southampton High School, 23350 Southampton Parkway, Courtland, VA.  The football & cheer camp is open to the first 200 participants, ages 6-14. Currently, 70 children have pre-registered for the camp.

Sponsored by the NFL Foundation, the camp is open to the public and directed by Southampton County native, Founder and Retired NFL Defensive Lineman, Greg Scott and his staff of League Representatives and coaches. In addition, members of the Hampton University Football and Cheer teams will be in attendance to lead portions of the camp.

Hampton University Coach Gary Lowery, who is serving his first year as assistant coach to the Pirates in the defensive lineman position, will be coaching at the camp. Within this position Coach Lowery is also responsible for day-to-day operations and recruiting.  Coach Lowery has not only played the sport of football, he has coached at both the high school and college level prior to gaining his position with the Hampton University Pirates.  

The participating football team members include:  Ronnie Screen, Junior Offensive Lineman; TJ Mixson, Junior Wide Receiver; Rashawn Proctor, Junior Wide Receiver; Ray Riddick, Junior Wide Receiver; Charles Owens, Senior Defensive Tackle; Miles Grooms, Senior Defensive End; Joshua Thorton, Junior Linebacker; David Watford, Graduate student Quarterback; Ibn Wallace, Freshman Defensive Back; Christopher Dukes, Senior Running Back; Donovan Johnson, Sophomore Offensive Lineman; and Eric Carter, Freshman Running Back will be assisting with the football participants.

Cheer participants will be coached by Cover 3 Youth Cheer coaches and Hampton University’s own Malani Mitchell, Hampton University Athletics Personnel.  Malani’s passion and love for the sport of Cheer dates back to her middle school days. She has led several of her teams to championships as a member of the cheering squad from 2005 through 2013. Malani served as the captain of her cheering squads in both her junior and senior year of high school. In addition to her cheering experience, Malani has a wealth of coaching experience to share. She has held several summer coaching positions dating back to 2008. Currently, Malani is working towards becoming a certified Coach in the State of Virginia.

Football and cheer drills and games will be non-contact and no tackling will be permitted. The camp will feature drills, fundamentals, motivational tools, inspirational messages, flag football competitions and games, free lunch and t-shirt for all participants. Cooper), Sussex Green Machine (Coach Jason Flowers). For the 2015 season, all children are allowed to play for the group of their choice without a release from their prior team. For questions concerning registration, please contact 757-562-2252. The Franklin Mustangs, Boykins Bulldogs and Windsor Knights are not participating in C3YFCL for the 2015 season. Players and cheerleaders from the Mustangs, Bulldogs and Knights are welcome to try out for any of C3YFCL 2015 teams.
