STITH TO SPEAK TO SVCC GRADS

Bryant Stith, a former National Basketball Association professional player, will bring his motivational and winning style to school as the guest speaker for the 2008 Commencement at Southside Virginia Community College on Thursday, May 15, at the Christanna Campus in Alberta at 6:30 p.m.

Stith holds the record at Brunswick High School and the University of Virginia as the highest scoring player.  The 6'5" shooting guard was selected from UVA with the 13th overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 1992 NBA Draft.  He played eight seasons with the team before being traded to the Boston Celtics.  He was also traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Clippers but never played for the Clippers and subsequently retired.  He played for the US national team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, winner the bronze medal.

Since retiring from the NBA, Stith has been involved with his home county of Brunswick and other areas of Southside Virginia.  His organization S.C.O.R.E. (Setting Children on the Road to Empowerment) sponsors the highly successful Middle College at SVCC.

This program is designed to help high school dropouts between the ages of 18 and 24 with getting their GED and starting college.  S.C.O.R.E has also built soccer and football fields at a site in Brunswick County to provide sports organizations for the youth of the area.

Stith is the recipient of an honorary Associate's degree from SVCC and also participated with SVCC President John J. Cavan in a biathlon running and biking from Charlottesville to Alberta to raise funds for S.C.O.R.E. and the SVCC Foundation.

After a short hiatus, Stith returned to basketball as the head coach of his high school alma mater.  He led his first two teams to the finals of the Group AA State Championship two years in a row finishing second each time.  For 2008, he was named State Group AA Coach of the Year by Virginia Preps.

About Stith, Dr. Cavan said, "He is a great role model for our graduates, not only as a great athlete but as a scholar."

Stith and his wife Barbara, have two sons, Brandon and Broderick, and two daughters, Bria and Brooke.  Barbara serves as a member of the SVCC Local Board.

Board of Supervisors Meeting
Last evening's meeting was a busy one for the Supervisors as they acted on items ranging from approving a proposed six-year plan on area roads to new tax relief programs for Greensville County residents.

Mr. Joe Lomax, the Residency Administrator for the Virginia Department of Transportation, went over the proposed six-year Transportation Plan for Greensville County.  The Supervisors approved the proposal which then will be incorporated into a Statewide plan for approval at the state level.

As Mr. Lomax explained, the money needed for this proposed plan fluctuates from year to year and that causes the plan to change.

Please listen to Mr. Lomax explained as you read the charts.

Join in on the fun with folks you know.  Still seats left for this adventure.
As you are aware the County and the city of Emporia provide the local funding for our local schools.  Last evening the Supervisors approved the school budget and the city will probably also approve the proposed budget this evening.  This needs to be done early in the year so that the School Board will know how much money they have in their entire budget for the upcoming 2008 2009 school year.

County Administrator, Dave Whittington, explains the procedure and the reason for each governmental body's share of local school funding---$7,147,155.

Local 6-year Transporation Plan
Commisioner of the Revenue Requests Employee
Martha Swenson, Commissioner of the Revenue, is requesting additional money from the County to hire an employee as the Commissioner's office will be asked to provide more services to the local residents for implementing the new Comprehensive Tax Relief Program which will be available in the next fiscal year.

Mrs. Swanson explains her research on the following audio clip.

Airport Commission Requests Local Funds to Help Acquire Grants
Rick Franklin, representing the Emporia Greensville Regional Airport, asked for and received $11,366 from the County.  A like amount from the city of Emporia should be forthcoming this evening during the City Council meeting.  The combined monies will be used to leverage and obtain funding for airport projects.

Normally the requests from the Airport Commission come during regular budget sessions, but just recently new airport grant monies were freed up and our local Airport Commissioners wanted to obtain the new found grant monies.  So for approximately $23,000 of local funds projects totaling $118,000 will be completed within a few short months.

In the following audio clip Mr. Franklin also explains larger projects to be looked at in the future.  Learn more about those future projects as well as how one local industry recently used the airport for delivering finished goods.

Reverse 911 Almost Ready
Reggie Owens asked for and received approval of the Board of Supervisors to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Emporia and  Greensville County for the implementation of the Reverse 911 Emergency Alert System.

The equipment will be located in the Emporia Police Department building and will be operational as of May 20.

Please listen as Mr. Owens explains the system.

Greensville County's Comprehensive Tax Relief Program
Already built into the proposed budget for the upcoming year, Greensville County is instituting two new programs for tax relief.  One deals with land-use taxation and the other is tax relief for the elderly and handicapped for real estate.

Mr. Whittington explains both programs as well as some changes to other tax relief programming already in place.

Because there are two new tax relief programs which you may be unfamiliar with, you will learn about the programs in detail.  The slide is a summary of what Mr. Whittington has to say about the two new programs.
