Are you getting the most out of your business website?  Does your business have an effective eCommerce presence?  Would you like to learn about ways to understand and apply web analytics?  With the increase in energy costs and overall operating expenses, it's critical that business owners maximize their presence on the web. A key method to do this is to know and understand Who's Looking at My Site.

Whether you are a service, retail, professional or manufacturing business the continued demand for a web presence is essential in business strategy today.  Join us for a seminar on Who's Looking at My Site? Thursday, May 15, 2008, 9 am - 11:30 am.  Learn about why you need web analytics, collecting and interpreting the data, choosing and using a web analytics package.

The Crater Small Business Development Center of Longwood University in conjunction with the Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center (VECTEC) at Christopher Newport University will be conducting this seminar at the Crater Planning District Commission Offices, 1964 Wakefield Street, Petersburg, VA. This program is made possible by a grant from The Cameron Foundation and in partnership with the Crater SBDC of Longwood University. For directions please go to www.craterpdc@state.va.us. The cost of the seminar is only $15 and the seating is limited to 20 reservations.  To make a reservation go to www.vectec.org/craterregistration  or contact the Crater Small Business Development Center of Longwood University: phone, 804.518.2003; fax, 804.518.2004; sbdcadmin@cpd.state.va.us.

VHDA HOMEOWNERSHIP WORKSHOP OFFERED IN EMPORIA on May 13 & 15

If you are interested in becoming a homeowner, then you should attend the VHDA Homeownership Workshop.  This workshop takes place on Tuesday, May 13 and Thursday, May 15 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Richardson Memorial Library, 100 Spring Street in Emporia.  Participants must attend both sessions in order to receive their certificate of completion.

Topics to be covered in this workshop include:  Personal Finances, Credit & Credit Issues, Working with a Realtor, Role of the Lender, the Home Inspection, and Loan Closing.  This workshop is aimed at first-time homebuyers who are financially ready to become homeowners and covers the educational requirement for a VHDA (Virginia Housing Development Authority) mortgage.  It may also count as first-time homebuyer education for other loan programs.

Space is limited in the workshop and registration is required so we can have enough materials on hand.  Please contact Virginia Cooperative Extension at (434)348-4233 by Friday, March 7 to register.  This workshop will be offered every other month in 2008.

The Emporia-Greensville Financial Literacy Coalition is coordinating this workshop and is interested in delivering education and counseling services to address financial literacy issues so that people of all ages know:  how to save, how to spend wisely, and how to give.  The Financial Literacy Coalition believes that increased financial literacy creates good money/credit management skills that can lead to more self-sufficiency, increased homeownership, fewer foreclosures, and a decrease in bankruptcies.  For more information or to join the Financial Literacy Coalition’s mailing list contact Amy Moore, Chairperson, at Virginia Cooperative Extension at (434)348-4233.

Biking 4,500 miles is tiring.  One must stop and rest.  And that's what Jeff did.

Yesterday Jeff Greene stopped in Emporia and stayed over night at Bobby Wrenn's home. Jeff is on a mission to raise money for two chapters of the American Red Cross.  Jeff has named his 4,500 mile trek The Ride for Red.

Jeff's Ride for Red cross-country bike trip is a 3 month, 4,500 mile ride by him, a Buffalo NY native. He began his trip in early  March of 2008.  During the trip Jeff will pedal across 14 states, from California to New York.

Jeff Greene's Ride for Red
Initially, he imagined this trip would serve as an event to signify his transition from military service in the US Navy to civilian life. Then he realized the trip could be much more than just a personal endeavor; he decided to make this amazing ride a benefit for the American Red Cross.

He began the trip on March 10 departing Oceanside, California.  He will finish his journey in Buffalo, NY. on May 15.

A few members of the Emporia Bicycle Club met Jeff on the road and biked with Jeff into Emporia.
